Fun Fact: The number one search engine inquiry related to red eyes is, “Why are my eyes red?” That question gets searched about 12,100 times per month. If you typed this question into Google and found us, thanks for stopping by! We hope you find this blog post helpful.
Here are a few reasons your eyes might be red:
1) They’re dry. I know they itch, but avoid rubbing them, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. If your eyes are dry, use eye drops as needed.
2) Those pesky allergies! The weather is finally getting warm and we all want to be outside. You know what else loves being outside? Pollen. Taking a daily antihistamine should help to combat seasonal allergies.
3) Conjunctivitis, or “pink eye” as it’s more commonly known. This is an infection or inflammation caused by bacteria, viruses, allergens, and other irritants like smoke and dust. One defining characteristic of this condition is that people often wake up with their eyes being sealed shut by this gross, gunky stuff called discharge.
Most of the time, conjunctivitis improves within two weeks. But it can sometimes develop into serious corneal inflammation and threaten sight. If you think you might have conjunctivitis, visit your eye doctor for an examination and treatment.
4) A potential underlying condition. I’m not trying to scare you. Most of the time, red eyes are caused by one of the first three options. But it’s also possible that your red eyes are being caused by a condition such as glaucoma. Visit your eye doctor if your red eyes are frequent just to make sure you don’t have an underlying condition.
When to visit your eye doctor
Itching and burning sensations are normal with red eyes, but you should definitely get an eye exam if you’re also suffering from severe headaches or migraines, blurry or poor vision, and nausea or vomiting. If you’re feeling these or other abnormal symptoms, contact your doctor as soon as possible.
